Don’t Be Nervous At Your Child’s First Dental Visit
It can be nerve racking to take your child to the dentist
for the first time. You don’t know how they’re going to respond, or if they are
going to have cavities and require extensive dental procedures to fix decay.
Instead of worrying about the visit, here are 4 tips from pediatric dentist,
Dr. Cameron Fuller to help decrease the anxiety.
1.
Prepare your child for the visit. The calmer
they are, the calmer you will be. This can include a pre-visit to the dentist
where they see the office, meet the dentist and maybe even sit in the dental
chair. This doesn’t have to be an official visit.
2.
Take your child to the dentist as soon as the
first tooth erupts. This can help to ease them, and you, into the habit of
visiting the dentist on a regular basis. If they always know 2x a year they
visit the dentist it will help to establish a regular routine.
3.
Have your children brush and floss regularly to
cut down on problems with decay and the potential for cavities. The fewer
cavities that your child is impacted by, the less problems they may have to
endure later on.
4.
Help your child to know what to expect when they
visit the dentist. After you have visited and met the dentist and the team they
are going to see, read a book about visiting the dentist. Talk to your child
about what the dentist is going to do.

You're right about how preparing my child for his first dental visit can help keep us both calm. It seems like if my son is feeling calm about going in for his first appointment, then I'll be able to feel relaxed. I suppose that should be fairly simple if I take him there once he a one year old. Now I feel better about his first dentist appointment. Thanks for posting this!
