6 Ways Decay Can Impact Your Teen

Your teen’s body is changing and so is their mouth. It is important as they grow older they continue to take care of their body and their smile. As they are growing and their food habits change - brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist is critical to keep their smile healthy.  If they fail to brush and floss during this time, they can end up with decay which can negatively impact their health. Dental care to prevent decay is critical during these years. Here’s why:

1.     Decay causes bad breath
Decay attacks the enamel of their teeth. As decay and bacteria build up it can cause their breath to smell. By age seventeen, 80% of kids have had at least one cavity.

 2. Decay may impact social interactions
Decay causes bad breath that can impact your teen socially. Unfortunately, teens are judged by their appearance and their habits. Bad breath can be a barrier to them reaching their goals socially.

3. Decay can cause a loss of school days
A student who has extreme decay can end up missing classes due to pain that requires a visit to the dentist. “Once they see the dentist, they may end up missing more school in order to recover from a major procedure and then they may miss another day of school in order to go back to the dentist to have everything checked to make sure it is healing correctly,” states pediatric dentist, Dr. Cameron Fuller.

4. Decay causes pain
Decay could potentially cause damage to the roots of the tooth. “Once the roots are damaged not only will it create a need for more dental work, it can also cause an extreme amount of pain,” says Dr. Fuller.”

 5. Decay could mean loss of teeth and orthodontic concerns later
Extreme decay leads eventually to tooth loss. There are times when so much of the tooth structure is lost to decay that it no longer can be fixed either with a filling or a crown. When this happens teeth must be extracted, leaving a space that must be filled or there will be future problems.

 6. Decay can prevent them from eating and drinking
Pain can make it difficult to enjoy foods and drink. During this time in your teen’s life they need more calories in order to feed their growing body. An inability to eat or drink due to dental pain decreases their overall health.

Don’t let decay stop them from enjoying their teenage years. Keep them healthy by seeing the dentist regularly.
