What Is IV Sedation And How Is It Used In Pediatric Dentistry?

Intravenous sedation is a mild sedation that is used to help your child be comfortable during dental procedures.  It can be used when your child is going to undergo a longer procedure, is fearful of the dentist, or has a difficult time staying still for long periods of time.  Although this type of sedation is not used often, it can safely be utilized to help provide the best possible dental care for your child.

IV sedation is different than other types of sedation that may be used in that a needle is inserted in the vein. The dosage can be distributed in two different ways: a  high enough dosage can be given slowly in order to provide enough mediation during the entire procedure, or in a continuous amount throughout the entire procedure. There are requirements before this type of sedation is given.

Once the proper dosage has been given to your child, pediatric dentist Dr. Cameron Fuller will continue to monitor your child’s heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and oxygen levels throughout the entire procedure.   You will need to sign consent before the sedation is given.

The dentist should be a positive experience for your child and your family.  Dr. Fuller and his team will answer any questions that you have about sedation before it is given to your child and will only use it when necessary.

  1. This is exactly what we need for my son at the dentist. We haven't taken him for over 2 years because he puts up such a fuss every time we're there. We can't even get him to get into the chair anymore. http://www.alaskadentistryforkids.com/our-team.html

    1. Hello Tony,
I am sorry to read that your son is struggling to visit the dentist. IV sedation can be a positive and necessary alternative if your child is experiencing severe anxiety. Partnered with finding the right pediatric dentist and IV sedation your son may begin to feel good again about his dental visits.

  3. I think that this is a great option for the kids that are very scared of the dentist! My daughter does not like going to the dentist at all, and it's always very difficult for the dentists to get the cleanings or fillings done. I think that having sedation is a great idea to help them feel more calm. Do you know how long it lasts for? http://southridgepd.com/

    1. Hello Julie,
The sedation should last shortly after the end of the procedure. Thank you for stopping by and I glad that you found the information helpful.

  5. Cameron, I liked how the article talks about sedation dentistry for younger children. I remember when I was younger, it seemed like sedation was a way to calm children down and help them get through the visit. Can a dentist calculate the time of the sedation period fairly accurately, or is it more of an estimate? I should probably read up more on this subject to see what more I can learn. http://www.parkavepd.com/services/sedation-dentistry
