What to tell your kids about going to the dentist for a first visit

Your child should first visit the dentist when their first tooth erupts and no later than their first birthday. This first visit is really important because most of the time your child is not experiencing any pain or problems allowing the visit to be more fun.

On their first visit to their pediatric dentist, Dr. Fuller at Pediatric Dentistry of Redlands andAssociates they will complete an oral exam to make sure there is no decay or other problems developing. If your child is old enough, you should explain what they can expect from the visit. Dr. Fuller recommends, “Do not mention words that may scare your child. Words such as shots or needles.”

This first visit will allow you to discuss any concerns you are having, however, it will also establish a healthy pattern for your child and allow them to see how important preventative care is. During the visit you may want to discuss brushing and flossing routines with the dentist and your child. The team at Dr. Fuller’s office can help show you how to properly brush and floss your child’s teeth if you are having difficulty.

You always have the option to stay with your child and you may be asked to hold them while the team completes their exam. Your child may have some fluoride applied to their teeth and the team will evaluate your child’s bite, jaw and overall oral health.

While the visit may seem short and informal, this is one of the most important dental visits because it will establish a positive and trusting relationship between your child and your PediatricDentist, Dr. Fuller.

  1. My sister is getting her child ready for her first visit to the dentist in the next couple weeks. Her first tooth just came in a couple days ago, and they want to get her in to make sure that there aren't any problems so far. It should be interesting to hear how she handles the visit.
