Electric Toothbrush & Your Child


There are a variety of toothbrushes that line the aisles of the grocery store. Your child may even scream for the Mickey Mouse rotating toothbrush or the toothbrush that sings their favorite song. You may think, ‘what’s two dollars more. That;s okay.’ But here’s what you need to know about the pro’s and con’s of an electric toothbrush for your children.

Electric toothbrushes can provide the ability for your child to reach places they may not be able to reach because of dexterity. Not to mention that some children enjoy the songs and the vibration of the toothbrush which encourages better and more accurate brushing. Electric toothbrushes can be great for children who struggle with the dexterity to reach the back teeth or other locations due to a disability. Dr. Cameron Fuller recommends that children have soft bristles on their toothbrush no matter which type it is, in order to protect their gums.

Electric toothbrushes cannot do it all. There are some myths that a child can simply place an electric toothbrush up against their teeth and it will do the job that it needs to do. If you are going to have your toddler use an electric toothbrush in order to get the positive results their smile requires, it is imperative that you teach them proper handling skills of an electric toothbrush.

What is a dental abscess?

One of the most common conditions affecting children's teeth are dental abscesses.  Children with severe cavities often have teeth that abscess.  Abscess of lower left primary tooth.  NOTE the tissue swelling on the tooth. Once the cavity invades the pulp of the tooth the infection spreads to the bone. At that point the tooth is no longer salvageable. A dental abscess is a swelling of the tissue around an infected tooth. The following symptoms may result from a dental abscess.  Children can often present with facial swelling, fever,  altered eating habits, poor concentration, poor sleep patterns, breathing problems, and general malaise. The treatment that is always recommended is antibiotics and extraction.

Do You Have Time For a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies for your children can crop up at any time and while some of them may not be able to be prevented, some can. For example, dental decay that damages the root, causing a need for a root canal, can be prevented with routine cleanings, regular brushing and flossing and ensuring that your child consumes healthy food.
