Children Without Dental Care Are 3x More Likely To Miss School

Image
Education is so critical for children today and the less school they miss the better. Children who have cavities and other dental problems that do not get taken care of immediately means it is more likely it will result in those children missing exponentially more days from school than children who do not have dental cavities. The good news is that this is completely preventable. Having your children brush, floss, visit the dentist regularly, eat healthy and consume water can decrease your children’s risk of getting a cavity. This is not all though, decreasing the amount of sugar they consume can help as well. But after they do consume sugar, rinsing their teeth with water or chewing a piece of sugarless gum can help to further decrease the risk of cavities. Severe dental decay can lead to other health problems including malnourishment, dental pain and the need for expensive dental procedures. Helping to prevent dental problems by using preventative measures can ensure that ...

How Do You Teach Your Kids About Dental Habits?

Image
The dental habits your children build when they are young are critical to what they will do when they are adults. If they visit the dentist on a regular basis they are more likely to continue that habit when they are older. If they floss now, this will then transform into a habit that they do for a lifetime. But it can be difficult teaching your children these habits. It is critical to start when they are young. Brushing their gums when they are a month old can begin this important habit. It will help them be used to something being in their mouth and the sensation of brushing. Their first dental visit should be scheduled as soon as their first tooth comes in. When they visit the dentist for the first time a pediatric dentist can make sure this is a positive dental visit which may mean the difference between success and failure for later dental visits. Dr. Fuller spends extra time building the relationship with patients in order to make sure your children are comfortable bei...

Information On Your Child’s Dental Check-Up

School is beginning and one of the reasons that kids miss school is due to dental pain and problems. This may include decay that lands them in the chair needing a root canal, or a cavity that gets worse and causes a more severe problem for them. Dr. Cameron Fuller and his team recommend that your children visit the dentist every six months in order to make sure there are in the best health possible.   Here are a few things to know before taking your child to the dentist. The pediatric dentist will probably recommend x-rays if it has been awhile. X-rays help to determine if there are problems in between your child’s teeth that cannot be seen. X-rays also allow the dentist to see the existing bones around the tooth. X-rays should be taken once or twice a year depending upon whether your child is decay active or not. There are plenty of precautions that are taken in order to limit the amount of radiation exposure. Ask your pediatric dentist if they r...

Don’t Forget The Mouth Guard

Image
Summer sports for your kids are heating up. If they are in sports such as baseball, football or other contact sports or if they ride bicycle, don’t forget to get a mouth guard and protect their teeth. There are usually three types of mouth guards you can purchase, “but here are 4 things to look for before purchasing one at the store,” says pediatric dentist, Dr. CameronFuller. 1.      It should fit properly. You do not want a mouth guard that is too small or too big. The mouth guard needs to fit comfortably in the mouth. Ensure that the guard does not inhibit your child’s breathing. 2.      Ensure the mouth guard has the right type of protection. There should be a minimum of 44 mm of material at each of the contact zones. Never re-use or use someone else’s mouth guards. 3.      Make sure the mouth guard is made of the right material. You do not want to have a mouth guard where the material easily c...

4 Reasons Why Flossing Is #1

Image
Getting your kids to floss their teeth can be a nightmare. It may be something you dread and a routine you fight with every night. But this is one bedtime routine that your children should not get out of. While it is not terribly common, millions of young children around the United States are impacted by periodontal disease. This disease is not something that should be messed with, because the impact can last a lifetime. Here are 4 reasons why flossing should be your #1 priority. 1.      When your child has periodontal disease it causes inflammation in the gums. This triggers a response from the body and the body gets into a cycle where it is constantly trying to fight the disease. Overworked, it can eventually begin to shut down the body causing other problems. 2.      The bacteria that is present in people who have periodontal disease can spread throughout the body damaging other organs. It can also spread be...
