Does Your Child Protect Their Entire Mouth From Bacteria?

Image
There are bacteria that stays in your child’s mouth all the time. You may think that if they are brushing and flossing that is enough. Unfortunately, there are bacteria around the gum line, on their tongue, and on their cheeks. Just brushing and flossing their teeth is fantastic, but your child will need to do more than that if they are going to have a healthy smile.    Here are 3 tips from Dr. Cameron Fuller and his team on how to keep your child’s smile healthy.  1.       Brush the tongue. There are bacteria that live on the tongue and if your child does not brush their tongue the bacteria can increase and build up causing bad breath, decay and other dental problems.  2.       Have them utilize floss that works for them. Flossing can be a difficult task, so you want to ensure they are able to floss all of their teeth. They also need to be able to floss their back teeth as it is easy for bacteria and food to ...

Building A Healthy Lunch

As children are getting ready to get back to school, something you may be thinking about is their lunch. While it can seem easier to have them purchase lunch at school, providing a healthy lunch everyday can not only improve their overall health but can ensure their smile stays healthy also. Children need to have access to fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. By packing fruits and vegetables that have a high concentration of water, you can help to decrease food that sticks to their teeth in between brushing. You may also want to pack food that is lower in carbohydrates to help decrease the risk of dental decay and food sticking to the surface of their teeth. Consider packing a water with fresh fruit in order to keep them hydrated and avoid high sugar drinks. Water can help keep them from becoming dehydrated as they run around a play with friends. Not having high sugar drinks can ensure they stay hydrated throughout their day. For a replacement of chip...

When Should I Be Concerned About Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a natural response for children who usually do it because it helps console and comfort them.   This is a natural event for children and is not usually anything you need to be concerned about until they begin to get their permanent teeth. Some factors can damage the alignment of the teeth more so than other factors. Research shows that the intensity in which your child sucks their thumb along with how often they suck their thumb are two factors that can influence the potential damage to their teeth.   Most children will naturally stop sucking their thumb between the ages of 2 and 4. If your child gets their permanent teeth and they are still sucking their thumb, you may want to begin helping support them to stop. You do not want to nag or punish your child for this behavior as it only may increase their need for comfort, thus increasing their desire to suck on their thumb. You may want to curb this habit if you begin to notice that the shape...

Finding a pediatric dentist that is the right fit for your family can be challenging. There are multiple characteristics that make a pediatric dentist a fantastic choice for your child, and some of it comes down to family preference. Here is a list of things that Dr. Cameron Fuller and his team recommend you may want to consider when looking for your next dentist. 1.      Which is better suited for our family a pediatric dentist or a general dentist? Pediatric dentists go to school for a longer period of time to focus specifically on children and how to handle them in order to become experts in their field. This means that they are well trained in dealing with challenges that are unique to children. 2.        Does the dentist and their team listen to you? It is critical to have an office that hears your concerns and addresses them. If you do not feel comfortable when discussing treatment and options neither will your child. Childr...
